Rak-Su Interview – Live & Love Music
The guys discuss musical influences, live shows and their 5 year plan
We’ve recently added Rak-Su to our main agency roster, so we took some time out to catch up with the guys to find out a little bit about their journey so far…
Hi guys! So firstly, how did Rak-Su form?
So Rak-Su is made up of four people… Ashley, Mustafa, Jamaal and Myles. We all grew up in Watford as friends and sang, rapped and danced, just not together. Eventually, Ashley heard Jamaal had never recorded a song before, so dragged him to a studio… the first song was obviously amazing, so they carried on and that was that. At their first performance Mustafa came and beatboxed (they were friends anyway). Myles and Ashley had made music together since they were kids and he was always around. Eventually, we said “stop being silly and just start recording with us bro…”. It was a really organic process that is centred around childhood friends having fun!
How did you come up with the name?
The name is a shortened version of tRAcK suits vs Suits. It’s basically a brief description of the struggle we go through everyday, having to be adults going to work with suits when really all we want to do is hang out and make music in our tracksuits.
Who or what influences your music?
This differs massively across the members, but Usher, J Dilla, J-Cole, The Notorious B.I.G and the Soulection Movement.
Sum up each band member in 3 words…
Mustafa – Dragon (what he can do when he dances and whilst beatboxing is just mythical). Ashley – Grandad (pragmatic, logical, always trying to put structures in place and moans when we’re not productive. Myles – Airbender (an adjective in Grime for people who just write complicated flows, the kid is full of them). Jamaal – Pure (writes when he feels the beat, sings when his heart decides and is genuinely a real clean hearted guy). He’s the singer, so this is obvious I guess haha
What does music mean to you?
Music to us is a form of expression, an outlet of emotions and a vehicle for us to suspend our youth having fun with our friends. In a world where so much is out of our control, it gives us balance when we need it and our friends most.
What can we expect from one of your live shows?
Smiles, fun, laughter and if you’re lucky, a story… We love a telling a good tale to go with our sets… 99% of them are true as well… we’ve got enough silly memories to last a lifetime.
What have been your biggest achievements so far?
Probably performing in Paris… That was amazing! Cartel Club was a different environment to what we’re used to, but being paid to go abroad and perform is the dream. We just need to make it happen more often.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years time?
In 5 years, we would love to be planning a second tour. Travelling performing, having fun and connecting with other souls is the dream! In 2021, if we could take ourselves around the world that would be unbelievable. Glastonbury wouldn’t be bad either haha.
What’s coming up next for Rak-Su?
We are going to do everything and anything that we want with no holding back. We’ve finished a new mixtape and are working on two singles to release early next year. We’re recording four videos and will be uploading freestyles, medleys and covers onto our Facebook page every fortnight. That tour in 5 years isn’t going to happen by itself… we’re about to get busy!
